The Nomascus Hainanus, also named Hainan black-crested gibbon, is a species found only in the original tropical rain forest of Hainan Bawangling National Nature Reserve, and has been under first-class state protection in China as an extremely endangered species. Since 2010, several villagers have been organized to set up a monitoring team for protecting the Hainan gibbon at Bawangling National Nature Reserve.

In the 1980s, there were only about 7 Nomascus Hainanus left in Hainan, whose endangered level was two levels higher than that of giant pandas. After years of monitoring and protection, the number of Nomascus Hainanus has now increased to nearly 30 individuals in 4 groups.
